More Chinese migrants using Balkan route to reach EU
SARAJEVO, Nov. 12 (TemA) – Authorities in the Western Balkans say growing numbers of Chinese citizens are joining migrants from the Middle East and Africa trying to enter the European Union through Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia.
Frontex recorded nearly 500 Chinese nationals crossing illegally along the so-called Balkan route this year — a sharp rise from previous years.
Officials say most arrive visa-free in Serbia or Bosnia before attempting to reach Croatia, often with the help of smuggling networks.
Human-rights groups link the trend to China’s slowing economy, censorship and youth unemployment.
EU border agency Frontex and Europol have stepped up patrols in the region after several fatal incidents involving migrant boats on the Danube.
