PM calls detention of Tirana mayor ‘a legal paradox’

TIRANA, Nov 12 (TemA) – Prime Minister Edi Rama says it is “a paradox” that Tirana’s mayor remains behind bars despite a court ruling allowing him to keep his post.
Speaking at a public meeting on the city’s budget, Rama said Mayor Erion Veliaj is being held “without trial” and that every citizen deserves the presumption of innocence.
He said the Constitutional Court’s decision differed from the government’s view but must be respected as a fair interpretation of the law.
Rama added that the municipality will continue to receive state support so city services run normally while Veliaj is detained.
He called on the court to stay consistent and let the mayor resume his duties once he seeks release.
