Young Brazilian footballer Vanderson Brandao de Sousa (18) has tragically died in Aragon after reportedly being accidentally shot by his younger brother while cleaning his rifle.

Police are still investigating the case, with the gun being seized. “Wanderson Brandao de Sousa. Our condolences to his family and friends. May God comfort all our hearts,” the club announced on social media and was reported by all the world’s media.

Family, friends and the region’s football community are shocked by the loss of a talented player who had just started playing for the club’s senior team.

Following the tragedy, the club suspended all activities and paid tribute to the talented striker: “The Piauí Sporting Club is experiencing a moment of deep sadness for the loss of striker Antonio Illano, who died in an accident. Illano has worn the club’s colors since 2024 and competed in the Piauíense U20, Sao Paulo Junior Cup and Northeast U20 League. He was about to travel with the team to the Copa Brasil Sub-20,” the club added in its statement.
