US President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that the US would resume nuclear testing, but did not say whether that would include the traditional underground tests that were common during the Cold War.
“You’ll find out very soon, we’re going to do some testing,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Palm Beach, Florida.
“Other countries are doing it. If they’re doing it, we’re going to do it too,” he added.
On Thursday, Trump said he had ordered the military to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time in 33 years. The move appeared to be a “message” to rival nuclear powers China and Russia.
It was not immediately clear whether Trump was referring to nuclear weapons tests or tests of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. No other nuclear power, except North Korea, has tested nuclear weapons in 25 years. North Korea’s last test dates back to 2017.
